Thanksgiving

You’ve probably picked up on this, but 2020 hasn’t exactly been the best year on record. Covid19, politics, social/civil unrest, and an overzealous hurricane season have combined to make this year—let’s just call it what is—awful. Have there been some bright spots? Absolutely! Yet, on the whole, 2020 just stinks. Wouldn’t you agree?

Now that we’re all thoroughly depressed thinking about how bad 2020 has been…

I want to remind you of some things that haven’t changed:

1. God is still Sovereign. Nothing can change that. He’s been sovereign from all eternity past, He’ll be sovereign for all eternity future, and He’s also sovereign at every moment along the way.

2. Jesus is still Lord. Nothing can change that. He’s been Lord from all eternity past, He’ll be Lord for all eternity future, and He’s also Lord at every moment along the way.

3. This, too, shall pass. I don’t know who I first heard say this, but some of the most powerful words in Scripture are, “It came to pass.” It didn’t come to stay; it came to pass. Now, I realize that isn’t the original intent of the phrase, “It came to pass,” but it’s still true. All these things we’re enduring right now will not last forever. They’re not final, lasting, or enduring. In a word, they’re not ultimate. But do you know what is ultimate? The sovereignty of God and the Lordship of Jesus Christ are ultimate.

We’re coming up on Thanksgiving, and it’s going to be tough for a lot of us. In spite of all that 2020 has thrown our way, let’s be faithful to the Scriptures: “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NLT). It doesn’t say we have to be thankful FOR all circumstances but that we are to be thankful IN all circumstances. Even if we can’t find anything else for which to be thankful right now, we can be thankful that God is still Sovereign, that Jesus is still Lord, and that this too shall pass.

Love you all,

Drew
